The tile calculator estimates the number of square tiles needed for a rectangular floor or wall. It calculates the surface area, calculates the area of one square tile from its side length and applies a fixed 10% waste allowance before rounding up to a whole tile.

How it works

Enter the surface length and width in meters and the side length of one square tile in centimeters. The calculator converts the tile side to meters, squares it to obtain tile area, divides total surface area by tile area, multiplies by 1.10 and rounds upward.

The formula

Surface area (m²) = length × width. Tile area (m²) = (tile side in cm ÷ 100)². Tiles = ceil(surface area ÷ tile area × 1.10).

The current calculator assumes square tiles because it accepts one tile-side dimension. The 10% waste factor is built into the formula. It does not separately model grout-joint width, pattern layout, borders or different rectangular tile dimensions.

Worked example

For a 5 m × 4 m surface using 60 cm square tiles, surface area is 20 m² and each tile covers 0.36 m². 20 ÷ 0.36 × 1.10 = 61.11, so the calculator rounds up to 62 tiles.

Use the result as a planning estimate. Diagonal patterns, complex room shapes, breakage, batch matching and large numbers of edge cuts may require a different project-specific allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator add 10%?

The implemented formula includes a fixed 10% allowance before rounding. Actual waste can be higher or lower depending on layout and cuts.

Can I calculate rectangular tiles?

This calculator currently uses one tile-side field and therefore models square tiles.

Does it account for grout joints?

No. Tile count is based on nominal tile dimensions and a fixed 10% allowance, without separately subtracting grout-joint area.
