Tip Calculator

Split the bill and tip fairly.

Splitting a restaurant bill shouldn't require a spreadsheet. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, say how many people are paying, and this calculator returns the tip, the grand total, and each person's fair share.

How it works

The tip is computed as a percentage of the pre-split bill, added to it, and the total is divided evenly among the group.

The formula

Tip = Bill × t ÷ 100 | Per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ people

t is the tip percentage. Customary rates vary: 15–20% is standard in the US, ~10% in much of Europe when service isn't included, and tipping is minimal or already included in many other countries.

Worked example

A bill of 180 with a 15% tip split four ways: tip = 27, total = 207, and each person pays 51.75.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention varies; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional rule, though many people simply tip on the final total for simplicity. The difference is small — choose one and be consistent.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

A mandatory service charge generally replaces the tip. Check the bill first — adding 15–20% on top of an included 12.5% service charge is a common tourist mistake.

How do we split fairly when orders differ a lot?

Even splitting works for similar orders. Otherwise, have each person pay their own items plus their proportional share of the tip — this calculator's per-person figure assumes an even split.
