Value-added tax turns a quoted net price into a larger final bill, and getting it wrong on an invoice causes real accounting headaches. This calculator adds VAT at any rate to a net price and shows the tax amount and the gross total separately.
Como funciona
Enter the net (pre-tax) price and your VAT rate. The calculator computes the tax as a percentage of the net amount and adds it — the standard 'exclusive' VAT calculation used on invoices.
A fórmula
Rates vary widely by country: 15% in Saudi Arabia, 5% in the UAE, 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany. Enter the rate that applies to your transaction.
Exemplo resolvido
A net price of 100 at 15% VAT: tax = 15, gross = 115. On an invoice you would show all three lines: net 100, VAT (15%) 15, total 115.
Perguntas frequentes
How do I extract VAT from a gross (tax-inclusive) price?
Divide by (1 + rate). A gross of 115 at 15% VAT contains a net of 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100 and tax of 15. Subtracting 15% of the gross (17.25) is a common and costly mistake.
Is VAT the same as sales tax?
For the end consumer the effect is similar, but VAT is collected at every stage of the supply chain with businesses reclaiming what they paid, while sales tax is charged only at the final sale.
Are all goods taxed at the standard rate?
No — most VAT systems have reduced or zero rates for categories like basic food, medicine, education, or exports. Check your tax authority's schedule for the correct rate per item.
